Polands am Byth!
Perhaps one of our Welsh-speaking members could let us know if the title means something other than "Polands Forever".
It was a great day for Team Hodge at The Welsh Federation at Builth Wells on October 18th when their WCB Female won Best Soft Feather Light, topping off a great day for them when they had three birds on Championship Row in total!
It's a Super Weekend for Alison, Lee and The Hodges.
Club Members Alison Jones,Lee Pedley and Steve & Graham Hodge certainly had reason to celebrate on October 4th and 5th.
While Lee was winning a Special Award for his Chamois Poland Female (pictured on the right) at The Bugle and District Poultry Society Annual Show down in Cornwall, Alison not only won Best Poland at Oswestry & District PS Championship Show, but also won Best Soft Feather Bantam Trio with 3 Chamois.
And to top it off The Hodges won both Poland Classes (LF and Bantam) at The Eden Valley Championship Show.
Well done to you all!

Autumn Show at Southport Sees Best Poland Go To Father and Daughter Team Andrew and Nicole Ball.
With the largest Poland entry for many a year at this season-opening show, our Club Chairman and his daughter Nicole took first place with a Bantam White-Crested Black Female that was beautifully presented on the day and drew many gasps of admiration from both other exhibitors and members of the public alike.
There were 9 birds entered in total, with Simone Lomax winning Best Bantam Male with a very striking Black. The full results can be found here
As a curtain raiser for The National, on November 1st the Southport & Ormskirk Bantam Society hosts its Annual Championship Show, where there are expected to be nearly 1000 entries in total. Our Club Secretary Clare Beebe will be judging that day and (subject to sufficient interest) there will be at least 4 Poland classes on the schedule - WC Male and Female, and AOC Male and Female.
So if you are a regular exhibitor or just a novice we would encourage you to come and support the breed and enter - either your Polands or other breeds. Indeed one of our members will be travelling up from Cornwall for the weekend, so it would be great if we could get as many of us there as possible. For a schedule phone The Show Secretary Philip Bentham on 01704 895107.
Poland 1-2-3 at Pembroke goes to The O'Connors
The Pembroke County Show on 19th August 2014 saw a clean sweep by Susan O'Connor in the Bantam Poland Class with 2 Chamois Females and a Gold-laced Frizzle Girl. Well done everyone! Full results can be found here
Team Hodge Double Up At Mottram
Following their success at Halifax, brothers Steve and Graham Hodge notched up another Double at Mottram Show on August 17th 2014, where they won Best In Show with this WCB bantam pullet, pictured here with Steve, and also Best Large Soft Feather Light with a LF WCB pullet.
Indeed, the pair's birds occupied five of the eight places on Championship Row, the others being a Rosecomb, a Modern Game and a Call Duck.
And this follows on from winning Reserve Champion at Gargrave the day before with a LF WCB pullet.
Steve and Graham's expansion into Polands has coincided with a real surge in popularity of the breed, and good specimens will always catch the eye of judges, who often comment that it is just like "the good old days" when Polands were regularly placed on Championship Row.
A Right Royal Success for The Millars
News reaches us that Brian Millar won Best In Show with this White-Crested Blue Bantam Pullet at The Turriff Show on August 3rd 2014, out of over 300 entries. Well done Brian! As the show was celebrating its 150th Anniversary, Her Majesty The Queen was invited along to present some of the prizes to the winning exhibitors. Unfortunately she did not make it as far as the poultry tent. Now that would have been some photo for the the newsletter!
Is Amber Our Youngest Exhibitor?
On August 6th, the the same day as The Hodge Brothers were once again gracing Championship Row at Bakewell, at the other end of the country, Amber O'Connor, daughter of Club Members Justin and Susan, and only 20 months old, was winning a 3rd Place Rosette with her little Chamois Female called Dolly in the Fur and Feather Section at The Nevern Agricultural Show in Pembrokeshire. Well done Amber and welcome to The Fancy!
SA & G Hodge won Best Soft Feather Light Bantam with a White-crested Black Female.
Double Delight at Halifax for The Hodges
Visitors to The Halifax Agricultural Show on August 9th 2014 must have thought they were seeing double when they looked at Championship Row.
Not only did the Hodges win Best Bantam Soft Feather Light with a White-crested Black Female, but they also had a Large Fowl White Crested Black Female get put up as Best Large Soft Feather Light. I don't know if they were in adjacent cages but it must have been some spectacle!
And the reason why one of these two stunners didn't win Best in Show is that they were beaten by a Black Orpington - owned, of course, by SA & G Hodge. Well done chaps!
Andrew Ball Fares Well in The Isle of Man
Our Chairman Andrew Ball ventures over to The Isle of Man with his family every Summer and this year they made sure to visit The Southern Area Agricultural Society who were holding their Centenary Show, where he has shown regularly in the past.
And not only did his White-crested Bantam Pullet win Reserve Best in Show, he also went and scooped the award for Best Pigeon, which is a pretty impressive double!
Thanks to Chris Parker for the lovely photograph too!

Poland Club Breeders' List Updated.
Our members tell us that one of the biggest reasons for them joining The Poland Club is that they then get access to The Club Breeders' List, as well as being able to advertise stock for sale/wanted via The Poland Club Facebook Group.
It allows those looking for stock to see the contact details of the many members who have asked to be included thereon, as well as the varieties they keep.
Several of the members operate on a commercial scale while many others breed purely for their own enjoyment. Thus, available stock, can vary greatly over the year, and indeed, some people on the list may not have stock for sale at all, but wish to be on the list so that others can see what colours they keep, so they can then exchange tips etc with other breeders.
If you wish to be placed on the list please send an email stating what colours and sizes you have, along with your preferred phone number and email address.
Can You Help With An Important Piece of Academic Research?
A number of Breed Clubs have recently been contacted by a group of academics who are currently undertaking a research project into chickens and their development over the years.
They are keen to hear from breeders interested in helping them acquire dead specimens which will aid them in building a skeletal reference collection of breeds that have been in existence since before 1800 - of which Polands are one.
They have already collected carcasses of Bantam Polands from one of our members, but they have been in contact again with Clare as they are in need of Large Fowl. So if any of you can help, or know of someone who can, please email Dr Richard Thomas at The University of Leicester.
The picture above shows a Poland skull compared with the skull of a regular non-crested chicken.
Full details of the project can be found here.
The aim of this website is to promote the breed
as well as offering help and support to breeders and keepers of Polands.
On the site you will find valuable reference material relating to Polands. The site is in its infancy so please bear with us whilst we add many more articles over the coming months.
You need to be a member of the Poland Club to gain full access to the website which is not viewable unless a member - member only pages include:
Membership is only £8 year for single and £12 year for family which offers fantastic value. To cover the extra postage costs, Republic of Ireland membership is just £12, and it is only £18 for the Rest of The World. This can be paid online through our Poland Club Shop.
Don't be shy come and say hi in the Forum - introduce yourself and we will do our best to help you.
Wishing you all the very best of success in keeping Polands - whether it is for exhibition or fun - our aim is to cater for everyone's needs.
See you in the forum.

Best Poland at The Cheshire County Show Goes To The Hodge Brothers
The Poultry Section at this popular agricultural show is always well-supported due to the great location and wonderful prizes on offer.
This year was no exception and SA & G Hodge won The Poland Class with a Bantam White-crested Black Male and came 2nd with a White-crested Blue Female.

Polands Feature in June Issue of Fancy Fowl
If you haven't seen it already, the June issue of Fancy Fowl Magazine features a two page article about our Chairman Andrew Ball, and his breeding program and techniques.
Whilst it only scratches at the surface of how Andrew goes about things it still provides a valuable insight into Poland-breeding at the highest level.
Read, learn and enjoy!

Steve Davies Wins Best Poland at Otley Show in May
One of our members says they every time he hears them called "Polish" a little piece of him dies inside.
But leaving that to one side, congratulations to Steve Davies who won Best Poland at Otley last week.
The Show requested a Club Special from Clare, which is the certificate at the front and this can be exchanged by current paid-up Club Members for a First Place Poland Club Rosette.
And as the Club's newest member, one of these will be on its way to Steve shortly.
Well done! It's nice to see Chamois Frizzles getting red cards!
James Weatherup Takes The Honours at Balmoral
The Royal Ulster Agricultural Show is one of the most prestigious events on the Northern Irish Calendar and James Weatherup has not only won Best Poland but also Reserve Best Soft Feather Light Bantam with his White-crested Black Female. Well done James!
James also has a Facebook Page for his birds here
Alison Jones Wins At Oswestry
Congratulations to Alison Jones who won Best Poland at Oswestry at The Spring Show on May 3rd 2014 with her 20 week-old Chamois Pullet.
Clare Beebe, our Club Secretary and Judge on the day, commented that the bird showed lots of potential once fully mature and was certainly heading in the right direction towards the standard of bird that we are all aiming for. Well done Alison!
Full results from the show can be found here.
Kirsten Mitchell Takes The Honours at Reading While Herbert Lusby Wins at The Irish National.
Preliminary Results can be found on the Show Results Page.
Well done to everyone who showed at Reading and Tipperary.
Herbert only joined The Poland Club recently and so has certainly made his mark early.
And Kirsten joined straight after the show so welcome aboard both of you,

Southport Spring Show Attracts Another Increased Poland Entry
There were 10 Polands on display at Holmeswood on February 15th, up from 4 last year, which once again is a very encouraging sign for the future.
Simone Lomax, entering only her 2nd Show, walked away with the honours and won Best of Breed with her Self-Black Hen. Well done Simone!
However, there was also another notable performance from a Poland Club Member. A certain gentleman, who wishes to remain nameless, donned an apron and did a fine job in the kitchen frying sausages and bacon and keeping up with demand all morning. Best Sausage Barm I've had all year, Steve!
Poland Class at Clitheroe Sees a 600% Increase in Entries over 2013
There were 6 Polands penned at The North of England Championship Show at Clitheroe on Feb 8th 2014, compared to one sole entry last year! With this encouraging increase, Steve Lane, a Poland Club Member, who is on the Committee there, has agreed to explore whether there can be a split Male/Female Class next year.
It was lovely to see the experienced shower, and new Poland Club Member, Sian Elphick exhibiting one of her flock for the first time - a Female Chamois Frizzle, which, although uncarded, had lovely colouring and a nice, forward-curling crest.
One of the attractions of Clitheroe Shows is the Pure Breed Auction that takes place on the same day. There were approx 600 lots and it made for a very enjoyable few hours while judging was taking place. 2 pairs of Tolbunts were snapped up for £28 and £16. A very nice pair of Silver-laced Bantams was sold for £40, while a pair of Self-whites raised an incredible £65!

Over the coming months classes and prizes will be organised and announced meaning that hopefully this event will be even better supported next year.
The show takes place at Lanark Agricultural Centre on 17/18th January 2015 and this year had 4000 entries in total, including a sales section.
